At the nursery, most of the parents informed Sally they wouldn't need to bring their children on Friday, having been given the day off. Therefore it seemed more than likely she would also have the day free. This would give her time to make sure Bill's house was clear of her belongings before he brought Joey home. It wouldn't do to have him find a woman's clothes lying about the place. The youngster had such an inquisitive mind, Bill might have to spend all Christmas thinking of plausible answers. Just then the phone rang.

“Hello Sally, Jo here! I was wondering if you were going to make it to the lecture tonight. You did get my note, didn't you?”

Sally winced, she had forgotten all about it. “Oh Jo I can't tonight. My parents are coming up to town. I'm meeting my mother as soon as I can get away from here. I'm sorry, but to tell you the truth it had slipped my mind.”

“Don't worry. I'll go on my own. I'll probably meet someone I know when I get there. Have you managed to do the assignment?”

Sally cringed. That was something else she had forgotten. “No. I haven't had time. But I'm a little ahead anyway, so it won't matter if I miss this one.”

Jo sighed. “I don't think you're going to finish this course, are you? You don't seem to have your heart in it anymore.” She paused for a moment. “Are you still seeing Bill?”

“Yes.” Sally hesitated. “I love him, Jo. I don't suppose you'll be able to understand it, but I really love him. I hate it when we have to go to work in the mornings and I spend all day looking forward to seeing him again in the evenings. I yearn to be near to him every waking moment.”

“I see,” Jo said, slowly. “And what about you're sleeping moments?”

Sally hesitated, it would appear a little of the old Jo was trying to sneak back in. But she wasn't going to allow her to take over again. “Yes and those too, though I don't see what it has to do with you.” Her tone was cold.

“Yes, you're right. It has nothing to do with me. I'm sorry.” Jo kicked herself. Why did she have to say such things? Quickly changing the subject a little, she said. “Do you're parents know about him?”

“Yes. I told them about him yesterday.” Sally softened her tone. “I'm sure you can imagine their reaction. Nevertheless, I told them how I felt and they said they'd try to understand. My mother is hoping to see Bill today, if he can make it. I hope he can, as I would like it all settled before they go off to Tenerife on Friday.”

“Gosh yes. I'd forgotten they were going away for Christmas this year. It's a sort of second honeymoon, isn't it?” Jo paused. “What're you going to do over the holidays?”

“I'm going to Bill's house. I could have gone to my brother's but, as you can imagine, I'd rather be with Bill.
